Irisin, a novel myokine: potential role in obesity and diabetes

چکیده
Obesity is a worldwide health problem that results in a signifi cant increased risk of morbidity and mortality. While we know that obesity is the consequence of a chronic imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure, how energy expenditure is regulated in humans is not clearly understood. Recent publications suggest that specifi c depots of white adipose tissue can be converted to thermogenically active beige adipose tissue and that the myokine, irisin may be a key regulator of this conversion. Responses of Muscle Mitochondrial Function to Physical Activity: A Literature Review
Skeletal muscles play an active role in regulating the metabolic homeostasis through their ability for relating to adipose tissue and endocrine hormones. Contraction of the skeletal muscle leads to increased release of several myokines, such as irisin, which is able to interact with the adipose tissue. Physical activity promotes the irisin mechanism by augmenting the peroxisomes (PGC1-α) in the...
متن کاملIrisin: A Possibly New Therapeutic Target for Obesity and Diabetes Mellitus
Irisin, a newly discovered myokine that reduces obesity and improve insulin resistance via the browning of white adipose tissues. Irisin is expressed and secreted in response to exercise, providing a hormonal link between exercise and improved insulin sensitivity. Several studies reported low irisin level in diabetic patient as compared to control. Therefore,it has been assumed that irisin may ...
متن کاملDoes IRISIN Have a BRITE Future as a Therapeutic Agent in Humans?
The epidemic of obesity has contributed to the rapid rise in comorbid conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, and hypertension among others. Therefore, there is a critical need to develop therapeutic strategies to reduce the prevalence of the disease. Skeletal muscle cells secrete signaling cytokines/peptides (referred to as myokines) that act in autocrine, para...
متن کاملBrowning of white fat: does irisin play a role in humans?
The discovery of irisin as an exercise-regulated myokine inducing browning of WAT has gained interest as a potential new strategy to combat obesity and its associated disorders, such as type 2 diabetes. However, there are inconsistencies regarding the relevance of irisin in humans. The regulation of FNDC5 mRNA expression by exercise and contraction could not be reproduced by a number of human s...
متن کاملThe Relationship between Serum Levels of Irisin with Cardiometabolic Biomarkers in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes
Background: Diabetes and obesity are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Irisin is a newly recognized peptidic myokine with anti-obesity and anti-diabetic properties. This study aims to investigate the relationship between serum irisin levels with cardiometabolic biomarkers in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: In this comparative cross- sectional s...
